Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy that may help in promoting deep relaxation and wellbeing. Reflexology is based on a theory that all systems and organs of the whole body are mirrored or reflected in the feet, hands, ears, and face. Although the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt and China, this therapy came to the West when Dr. William Fitzgerald developed “Zone Therapy” where he mapped reflex areas on the feet and hands that were linked to systems and organs within the same zone. In the 1930s Eunice Ingham furthered this theory into what is known as modern reflexology. She felt that congestion or tension in a certain part of the foot was reflected in the corresponding part of the body. A reflexologist works the reflex points in the foot or hands by applying pressure with their fingers in an attempt to bring those areas back into balance and reduce stress. Reflexology can be received by people of any age. Reflexology is a wonderful complement to Colon Hydrotherapy.
What happens during a reflexology session?
A health history will be taken at your first session. You will sit in a comfortable chair and remove your shoes and socks. The therapist will use their hands to apply pressure to the feet or hands depending on which area is requested. There may be occasional areas of discomfort but generally the experience is very relaxing.
What are contraindications for reflexology?
While reflexology is very safe, there are a few conditions that reflexology may not be a good choice. These include:
- Foot injuries
- Pregnancy
